Scripture Union is a global movement operating in over 120 countries around the world. We are a non-denominational organisation working with the many different churches which make up the Christian community of believers. Being non-denominational our teams are made up of volunteers from different churches usually found within a geographical area, like a suburb or region. Whether Rural or Metro, all of our programs are designed for the local context, and the reason for that is, because we believe in community.
At SUSA, you won’t see any international ‘big-name’ celebrity coming in to put on a show. Instead, what you will see are your every-day people, the Bill and Jenny of your community. These are people who send their kids to your nearby school, shop at your local supermarket or grocery store, or are involved in sporting or community clubs. Normal people who you would bump into on the street – people, just like you!
We believe in community. One of our overarching themes is to build it. This is our strength. It separates us from most other ministries and organisations because ‘we get’ community. Local people know their area better and have a vested interest in it; – They live there!
We are a church without walls. So in everything we do, we encourage unity between the churches, building bridges and relationships, working together as a unified team, not in isolation of. All of our programs are designed to activate the faith of Christians, and help the church break out from it’s four walls and traditional structure. To put it simply, we help churches re-connect with their community.
We are not only non-denominational, but we are also a not-for-profit organisation. Our primary source of funding is through donations. At SUSA, we don’t receive any government funding. Every program and employee is funded through the generous support and financial generosity of others. We’re also very discerning from where we accept donations. In order to maintain our integrity and our conscience, we will not accept finances generated from either gambling or alcohol related activities. The SUSA Governing Council have expressed their deep concern over the matter, believing it unethical to profit or benefit from the scruples or weaknesses of another.
